Tools are equipment that aid in the gameplay of Bugsnax. There are two types of tools:

  • Management Tools that provide overview of the inventory and storyline.
  • Field Tools that are used to catch Bugsnax as well as advance in the area.

Management Tools

The Journal is an information resource for all Bugsnax, functions as an interface that provides an overview of all tools (including the Journal itself) and compiles all Management Tools together. Through the Journal, the Map can be interacted with for fast-travel between areas and well as management of the Snakpack.

The Snakpack, which is the inventory of Bugsnax the Journalist carries with them, can be emptied of unwanted Bugsnax.

In the section 'Clues and Leads', the inventory of key items are displayed, which are all needed to be collected for the storyline.

The Grumpedia, which lists biographies on the expedition team and Clumby, are written by the Journalist.

The Bugapedia lists biographies on Bugsnax (including their 3D models, cry and a calories indication[1]) - sorted per biome.

  • Quests
  • Letters - The Journalist keeps all the letters they have received, both the request and response. This has no other purpose than the sentiment of being able to reread.

Hat Board

Hats are collectable dress-up accessories for Bugsnax, found scattered around Snaktooth Island. The Hat Board is a management/inventory tool, situated at Gramble's Barn, that indicates where a hat was last spotted through showing a painting of a biome.

It can only be used at Gramble's Barn, where the roaming or stalled Bugsnax can be given a hat. Which Bugsnax are displayed depends on the variation in donation and refreshes upon leaving and entering Snaxburg but what "spot" has which hat worn remains memorized by the game. The hat is thus tied to a "spot" and not the Bugsnak wearing it.

It is an odd categorisation of a Tool, as it is the only tool not taken into the field nor actively gifted by the expedition team, or rather there is no indication as to where the tool came from. By its logic, the Donation Box of Gramble or the Mailbox should also be considered a tool.

Field Tools

Field Tools are used to detect, lure, stun and trap Bugsnax and advance in the area as well, applying the tools to the surroundings.

The Journalist starts off with one field tool on hand; their SnaxScope - a scan device and research tool to get information about the surroundings. Upon scanning, the subject scanned will have a white outline, and a text balloon pops up with both the name of the subject as descriptive text or ponder thoughts provided by the Journalist. The information is not documented in the Journal.

The SnaxScope and Bugnet do not appear in the Tool selection interface. The Snaxscope is assigned to a seperate button so it can be quickly equipped. The Bugnet is a 'quicktime event' in which a button to scoop up a Bugsnak is present when the conditions are right (A bugsnak is stunned and elementally harmless)

Catching tools Bugnet, Stun & Lure tools Buggyball, Lunchpad,

When the Journalist is in the field, the Journal , the SnaxScope and the catch tools

The Journalist aims and guides the tools using Tools like the Lunchpad have a build in trajectory lines.

For gameplay ease, trajectory lines appear when the Journalist throws an object.

The catching tools are predominantly designed and engineered by Snorpy Fizzlebean. The Snaktrap, Lunchpad, Snakgrappler and Tripshot are all Snorpy creations.

The Tools have colors that correlate with the Grump who gave the tool. This design choice has aesthetical-, visual storytelling- and gameplay value.

The Diary has streaks/stitching of Beffica purple with at the back of the book Beffica's signature. The Lunchpad The Snakgrappler has Chandlo green streaks. Snorpy made it for Chandlo to get his scattered basketballs out of high places and wants the Journalist to test it. The Trip Shot has yellow streaks of Snorpy. It's trajectory line is yellow as well and aimed from the knitted wrist remote.

The Snaktivator has no markings of Floofty. They gave it to the Journalist to have it field-tested. Upon encountering them again and continue their Main Quest, Floofty request the device to be handed over for an update. It does not seem like data gathered from the field-test are reviewed by Floofty.

Tools are given during Main Quests.

Chronology

The Snakgrappler and Lunchpad both need to be obtained to finish Chandlo's Main Quest.
