The Story Events are a type of Quest which progresses the story by granting access to more areas and with it the ability to return the next wave of expedition members to Snaxburg.

Story Events become available when all expedition members of their respective wave have returned to Snaxburg through their Main Quests. Story Events are activated by interacting with Filbo - who congratulates the Journalist on their efforts for returning Snaxburg to former glory and thinks it calls for celebration/relaxation. As quest-giver the events carry a Filbo focus, which supposedly makes up for his lack of Side Quests and involvement thereof. Filbo's Main Quest is arguably the first Story Event and all Story Events afterwards are continued Main Quests for Filbo.

Due to the nature of the Story Events showcasing the interaction of the expedition team with one another, the events are predominantly dialog driven with every character bringing their own flavor to the table. The journalist has little to no input in the events nor is it reflected on in the Journal. Unlike Main Quests or Side Quests, Story Events do not require catching Bugsnax. To keep true to the medium of a video game, the Journalist is set to small tasks of fetching during an event.

Story & Events[]

The earliest Story Events took place before the Journalist's arrival at Snaktooth Island. These Events are discussed in the Interviews by individual Grumpuses.

The Recruitment (pre-arrival)

Elizabert Megafig promoted her expedition by various means and seemingly let anyone who applied join - if they were not already personally invited. The team travelled by boat from New Grump City to Snaktooth Island and build Snaxburg - this progress was filmed and used as part of the invitation Lizbert had send to the Journalist, who was the final expedition recruit to join the settlement.

The Fight (pre-arrival)

To most of the town, Lizbert was a good leader who took care of them and kept the town stable, even though personal issues and doubt started to arise, as partially documented in the Video Diaries. After the final Video Diary, Lizbert and Eggabell vanished, and the town broke out in panic. Each member has left town either out of safety, mental health or to escape the consequences of their own actions. Filbo left in an attempt to find Lizbert.

Filbo Leads The Way (main quest)

The Journalist arrived to the island on their flying ship but was knocked out of it by an UFA. They come across the remains of someone who left unclear warnings. The Journalist ventures through the area dealing with the earthquakes and is knocked out in a fall, recalling presenting the videotape invitation of Lizbert to their boss Clumby - who explicitly told them not to fall off a cliff.

Once regaining consciousness, they come across a weakened Filbo and upon realizing they are the long awaited Journalist, (he comments on them being a bit late) he leads them to town, where they meet Wambus and Beffica along the way. Wambus' Main Quest is completed during this venture and he join in returning to town, making Filbo and Wambus the first wave of returns. Beffica and Gramble are the second wave.

Filbo's Cold Welcome

Filbo thinks with the return of two more Grumps it is time for a Welcome Back party. The attendees however are only on good terms with the Journalist and Filbo's attempt to interact with them or make them interact with each other comes with disastrous results. Filbo, wanting to end the night somewhat positive, hands a reluctant Journalist a Strabby to consume. The event ends with the Journalist having spend the rest of the night dealing with (what Filbo assumes to be) an allergic reaction. Wiggle and Triffany are the third wave of returns.

Snaxburg Gets Spooked

Filbo thought it would be fun to gather the town for a nice campfire but discussing Triffany's research, Wiggle's theories and Beffica's observations causes them to get jumpy and it is up to the Journalist to get up and go about town. Chandlo, Snorpy and Cromdo are the fourth wave of returns.

Snaxburg Isn't Safe

After Filbo told the Journalist to "take a day off", it comes to an abrupt end with the town gathering at the entrance due to a cryptid sighting. The Journalist is put on gathering evidence of whatever Gramble and Beffica witnessed. The Grumps scatter around town to stand guard, open to be individually interacted with. Despite being skeptical of one another, the expedition team fully trusts the Journalist's every word, even when they proclaim it must be aliens, because the conclusion is that something is out there and it is threatening them. The town wants to split up again but Filbo stops them by saying we have a better chance of survival if we stick together - and offers to organize a big party once everyone returned. Shelda and Floofty are the fifth wave of returns - Eggabell does not join them but is required to have been met.

Filbo Brings The House Down: Major Celebration

The Point of No Return - the game escalates towards its end when starting this Story Event.
With everyone returning, Filbo holds his promised party. The Journalist is tasked with having to get everyone on the dancefloor. They require some encouragement and/or tying up loose ends. Filbo looks over town from Lizbert's balcony and the Journalist joins him. He speaks highly of them, having made it possible, and feeling hopeful for Lizbert now that they know Eggabell is alright too - Shelda comes up to announce the end of times and a heavy earthquake knocks the house they are in to the ground.

Filbo Brings The House Down: The Quake

The town discusses their doom as the island is falling apart, something might be coming for them and the Bugsnax escaped so they might starve. Filbo urges everyone to stop losing it with every set-back and Eggabell comes join them to everyone's surprise, having figured out the way to where she expects Lizbert resides, and asks Filbo and the Journalist to come along. In the meantime the town is set to prepare "for the worst" by preparing weaponary if needed and getting the Journalist' ship ready for lift-off. They will sustain on Wambus' sauce in the meantime. Filbo and Eggabell wait for the Journalist to follow them to the Frosted Peak. The Grumps scatter around town in couples - upon approach trigger a conversation between them. Afterwards they are open to be individually interacted with.

Escape From Snaktooth - The Battle

Lizbert and Eggabell tossed Filbo and the Journalist from the top of the mountain down to Flavor Falls. As a throwback to the beginning of the game, the Journalist and Filbo are both knocked out and wake up in a dazed state. They soon remember they have to go and save the expedition team.

Upon arrival, Snaxburg has turned into a battlefield and the Journalist is set to aid all the Grumps in their battles, who have organized themselves in couples. The aim is to fend off Bugsnax long enough without Grumps succumbing to their hunger. The surviving Grumps run off to board the ship. If a Grumpus has their Side Quests completed they are invincible in this moment and a bad performance will not come with bad result. Out of all Story Events this is the most gameplay active and on the level of any of the optional Boss Battles.

Escape From Snaktooth - Reflections

After escaping and reaching New Grump City Shores, the surviving Grumps scatter around the beach to collect their thoughts. They can be individually interacted with and half the team has different dialog depending on if their partner has perished.

Filbo's dialog varies on performance during the battle and offers the option to redo it when not everyone made it.[1] If all is well according to the Journalist, the surviving crew runs off to go back to society.

The epilogue and endcredits follow after.

Grumpus Story Event involvement[]

Per Story Event, "upcoming" Expedition Members are mentioned by other Grumps to show their community connections. Lizbert is mentioned many times as the main missing person. Wiggle and Cromdo are both not mentioned in Story Events
