Scrapped Gameplay Mechanics[]
The following list is a collection of all the known "scrapped ideas" during the development of Bugsnax.
- Before sauces were considered, Bugsnax would have been attracted using lures matching their flavors, such as meaty, salty, fruity, and sweet.[1]
- Honey was originally planned as a sauce, in a Grumpus-shaped bottle.[2] It was removed due to too much overlap with the other sauces.[3] Honey bottles can be seen in Snorpy's cabin and Shelda's hut in the final game.
- Bugsnax originally had to be prepared before feeding, such as by "peeling" them. The player would be given a score based on their performance preparing them.[4][5] Bugsnax were also planned at some point to make sounds while being processed.[6]
- A lot of tools did not make the cut into the game, many of them being unnamed.[7]
- The gameplay of Bugsnax was going to on-rails like that of Pokémon Snap.[8]
- In one early idea, Food Cannons were used to shoot food into the Grumpuses' mouths.[9] Doing so would alter their personality traits, with the goal of getting them to cooperate with one another to work on town construction jobs.[10][11] These relationships would form procedurally.[12]
- Originally, eating Bugsnax would give Grumpuses new accessories and modify the size and shape of their body parts, rather than transforming their parts into the corresponding food.[13]
Scrapped Bugsnax[]
The following is a list of known Bugsnak concepts that did not make it into the final game.
- Wafflepillar (the first Bugsnak conceptualized)[14][15]
- A grilled cheese crab[16]
- A baconfly[17]
- A spaghetti and meatball snail[18]
- A string cheese worm[19]
Changed Content[]
Content that has been changed but the output is essentially the same. This list will mostly contain design in appearance.
- Grumpuses were conceptually going to be frog-, sheep-, or jellybean-like.[20][21][22] Elements of the jellybean shape and frog-like features still persist in their current Muppet-like look.
- In early builds, the characters spoke in gibberish instead of full voice acting. While gibberish allows more freedom for localization and dialog variety, it also can obscure the idea of involvement in a community.[23]
- Bugsnax used to have beady eyes instead of googly eyes, and many more realistically resembled the animals they were based on.[24][25]
- All Bugsnax went through a conceptual phase of design and naming. For example, Shishkabug was called "Kabub", and Orange Peelbug was called "Orbinge".[26]
