Sauce is a type of fruit native to Snaktooth Island. It functions as a lure and decoy for Bugsnax, used in combination with the Sauce Slinger.
The Sauce plants grow flowers and from the flower's pistil the Sauce is formed. Sauce fruits have a bottle-like appearance, with a soft outer tissue that burst upon collision with any surface. It dissolves when it comes in contact with water.
There are six known species/types of sauce and some species are exclusive to a certain biome. The conditions of these biomes (resources and weather) do not affect the ability of any sauce species to be able to grow. The plants are 'ever-bearing', meaning it grows throughout the seasons.
When the Journalist obtains a new type of Sauce, it will become available in Wambus's farm in Snaxburg. When picked from the flower, it will grow back after a few seconds and bear a total of five fruits. These fruits can be picked individually by hand or Snakgrappled in one shot. The latter can only be done on a 'wild bush' as Field Tools (with the exception of the SnaxScope) cannot be accessed in Snaxburg. The Journalist can carry a maximum of 20 bottles per Sauce.
Most Bugsnax native to a biome are attracted to certain sauces and at least one of their preferred sauces will be growing in that biome, reflecting[1] a natural ecosystem. The attraction of certain Bugsnax to Sauce is based on "what sauce goes well with that dish" according to United States cuisine[2]. Among Bugsnax, Sodies are an outlier species who "dislike Sauce" and spray any sight of it, causing it to dissolve.[3]

Sauce Plants[]
Sauce plants have strong stems to hold up their sauce fruits. Sauce fruits grow with the supposed bottlecap side outward, seemingly functioning as the sepal. The sauce drips on the plants leaves.
Use[]
Common Uses[]
Just like other throwable items, the sauce is thrown using a standard parabolic model, and the process of charging will have a blue line displaying the trajectory. The landing point of the sauce will have a blue light dot display.
All sause can apply on the Snak Trap, Buggy Ball surface, Trip Shot and Lunchpad. This can lure Bugsnaxs which like the corresponding sause to move on these tools. The most useful tool which covered with sause is Buggy Ball because playes can control its free movement.
Sauce can cover the vast majority of Bugsnax. This means that by covering Bugsnax's favorite sauce on other Bugsnax, they can collide and enter a stun state, making it easier to catch. Some requests require players to take pictures of Bugsnax covered with specific sauces by Snaxscope.
Of course, Sauce can cover any place on the map without water, also can be used to lure Bugsnax, but it disappears quickly and fades away in a few seconds.
Special Uses[]
Sodie family (Dr Sodie, La Sodieux, Mt Sodie and Sodie D) hate all Sauses. This mean they will use water bubble attack all Sauses they have seen. La Sodieux's fire-extinguishing is only way to catch Flamin's Cheepoof.
If Shy Weenyworm is covered in ketchup, the other will instantly dash into it and knock it out, making it vulnerable to capture in the Bug Net.
The only way to catch Poptick is that the player use the Sauce Slinger to cover it in hot sauce, causing Scorpenyo to shoot a fiery projectile at it. The fire will cause Poptick to pop, becoming puffier, larger, and catchable.
The only way to catch Flutterjam is that shooting it with Peanut Butter and catch it by Bug Net.
Fiction[]
As early as Lizbert's expedition team set foot on Snaktooth Island, they have been experimenting with food alternatives to eating Bugsnax, as the latter they found out needs to be eaten raw and alive. Gramble Gigglefunny is the only expeditionee who takes issue with this treatment of these creatures and has uphold this stance by not eating Bugsnax.
Wambus Troubleham has been farming the main alternative the island has to offer, namely sauce, which would help one sustain/survive just long enough, although it is not "the healthiest"Interview Eggabell pt.2!.
Grumpuses who are able to resist eating Bugsnax seem to be able to subsist on sauce alone, as Shelda eats only cheese sauce while in the desert. It is possible that Gramble and the Journalist survive on sauce as well, as they are not seen eating Bugsnax (at least of their own volition).
- Wambus throws sauce on other characters on two occasions:
During Escape From Snaktooth, Wambus introduces his Special Sauce. This sauce is only present during the endgame sequence, and is a combination of every other sauce in the game. This sauce is irresistible to Bugsnax, to the point that they will only focus on the sauce, causing their demise in the collision with one another.

References & Notes[]
- ↑ The symbiosis between Snax and Sauce does not rely on survival and reproduction. Bugsnax do not feed on Sauce but are simply attracted to it. If Sauces rely on Bugsnax to spread their seeds is undisclosed.
- ↑ If Bugsnax were to reflect the culture of nearby mainland New Grump City, based off of New York City, to show recognisable food as to manipulate consumption, it would fit the story's direction. However, New York is nowhere near the equator and ancient Grumpuses are roughly based off of the South Americas and South East Asia (right beneath the equator) and to them a 'pickle jar' or 'mozarella pizza' would not be a foreign concept. No cuisine of any other culture, aside what is acceptable, known and popular within mainstream United States culture, is present on the island or is alluded to have ever been present.
- ↑ Sodies treat exposure to sauce the same as fire. As presence of either cause chaos in the biosphere, it might be that Sodies fulfill a neutralizing role within the biome's ecosystem.
- ↑ Although Pineantula is proven to like chocolate sauce in-game, the Journal and SnaxScope don't make any note about such a thing.
- ↑ Instabug used to love hot sauce, despite it not being listed. This is because the developers forgot to remove it when starting from a previous file. (https://twitter.com/luthyr/status/1523299285751975936)
- ↑ Honey is found in the files but is not in-game. Due to Hunnabees being native in Sugarpine Woods perhaps it would have been found there.
